Celebrate Inclusive Schools Week 2008 and Raise Awareness about Inclusive Education Year-Round!
Many schools, communities and families around the world use Inclusive Schools Week as an opportunity to celebrate their progress in promoting quality education and better educational outcomes for students with disabilities. However, it is important to remember that Inclusive Schools Week is also a great opportunity to raise awareness around the benefits of inclusive education for ALL children. Furthermore, many of ISN's materials and resources can be used to raise awareness and promote inclusive educational practices year-round.
Here are some ways to promote Inclusive Schools Week and raise awareness about the benefits of inclusive educational practices for all students:
- Be sure to let others in your school and community know about Inclusive Schools Week. School and district staff, as well as parent groups, may want to use newsletters, events and email to let people know about the Week. Free publicity materials for ISN and the Week, including a full-page or half-page ad, the ISN logo and the logo for the 2008 Week, can be downloaded from: http://www.inclusiveschools.org/content/celebration-and-awareness-materials.
- If your organization has a website, post the dates for Inclusive Schools Week (December 1-5, 2008) with a link the the ISN website: www.inclusiveschools.org.
- ISN products such as posters, stickers, pens, pencils and bookmarks are a great way to spread the word to parents, students and school staff. 2008 products can be ordered at: https://fcsn.org/inclusiveschools/orderform.html.
- Plan Inclusive Schools Week events for your school or community, or other events that celebrate the benefits of inclusive education. A Planning Checklist (pdf) can be downloaded from: http://www.inclusiveschools.org/files/Inclusive%20Schools%20Week%20Checklist%20-%202008.pdf.
- Ask your community and state leaders to issue an official proclamation recognizing Inclusive Schools Week. The Proclamation Toolkit (pdf) can be downloaded from: http://www.inclusiveschools.org/files/ISW%20Proclamation%20Toolkit%20-%202008.pdf.
- Contact local media with information about Inclusive Schools Week, your celebration events, and the benefits of inclusive education in general. Media Tips and Sample Letters-to-the-Editor are available at: http://www.inclusiveschools.org/content/celebration-and-awareness-materials.
