Institute Participants Will Gain Knowledge and Skills in the Following Areas:

  • Current research and effective practices in standards-based literacy, mathematics and science at the secondary level
  • Relevant and practical co-teaching strategies for middle and high school classrooms, incorporating strategies for students with and without disabilities
  • Strategies to promote social success among middle and high school students
  • Progress monitoring strategies based on current trends in assessing and grading secondary students with disabilities
  • Curricular adaptations in a high stakes environment
  • Quick and easy strategies across content areas to impact learning for all students
  • Culturally responsive educational practices
  • Techniques for building stronger partnerships between general and special educators, as well as with students and families
  • Effective use of common planning time

The 2009 Program commences with a two-day summer institute and concludes with an online follow-up opportunity in the fall, resulting in team developed action plans. During the summer institute, participants will engage in lectures, learning activities, and action planning sessions. Content will build on knowledge and skills in effective strategies for inclusion at the secondary level and leadership development. Participants will complete action steps between the summer and the fall follow-up session and have the opportunity to sharesuccesses and problem-solve with faculty and peers. The follow-up session in the fall will include webinar discussion opportunities through the Inclusive Schools Network.

Dr. Lisa Dieker: Dr. Lisa DiekerLead Faculty: Dr. Lisa Dieker is an Associate Professor and Lockhead Martin Eminent Scholar at the University of Central Florida. Her primary area of research focuses on collaboration between general and special education at the secondary level. She is the co- editor of the Journal of International Special Needs Education and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Psychological and Educational Consulting. She is the author of The Co-Teaching Lesson Plan Book and featured presenter for a video - 7 Effective Strategies for Secondary Inclusion.
